Fragments: Memories Reconstructed
Fragments: Memories Reconstructed
Join us for this intriguing exhibition! The artwork is sure to amaze you. Dot and Paula have been collaborating for nearly a year composing an assembly of textures, colors, and materials. Wax and weaving are used to express their creative energies.
Dot Bergen paints with resin and beeswax. Formally trained as a scientist, she leverages her advanced degrees in Invertebrate Zoology and Marine Ecology to inform my point of view. Most often her work references natural phenomena such as fossilization, mineralization, growth, cellular movement and the ocean. Bergen often incorporates natural fibers into the artwork which gives them a sculptural look. The natural world is the common thread that unites her work. This creative process of intersecting science and art is a cherished joy for Bergen.
In her work, Paula Stebbins Becker allows the hand and the thread to lead the way, intuitively building layers that bring about surprise, beauty and imperfection that connects with human experiences. Threads are unraveled, entangled, knotted, stitched, and woven, forming layers of texture, color, and pattern, connected to the hand, memory and spirit. Inspired by textiles, and photographs that are lost or discarded, Paula expresses the fragility of life, and how as humans we have the ability to embrace our past while creating new patterns and stories that bring about positive change in ourselves, and our relationships with the environment and each other.
